AUC academic contributed to the vision of a “Resilient and Green Nicosia

Cyprus American University (KAU) Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department and Architecture Department faculty member Dr. Esra Köksaldı participated in the “Resilient and Green Nicosia” Workshop organized in collaboration with the Nicosia Turkish Municipality, Near East University Faculty of Agriculture, Ufuk Planning, and KTMMOB Landscape Architects Chamber as part of the “Multidisciplinary Spatial Planning Education” program. – Multidisciplinary Spatial Planning Education” organized in collaboration with the Nicosia Turkish Municipality, Near East University Faculty of Agriculture, Ufuk Planning, and KTMMOB Landscape Architects Chamber. The event is taking place in Central Nicosia from October 8-13, 2025.

The workshop brings together the fields of urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, and environmental design through an interdisciplinary approach. It aims to create a platform for joint discussion and knowledge sharing on the planning, management, and sustainability of resilient cities by bringing together academics, local governments, experts, and civil society representatives.

In his presentation titled “The Historical Development of Public Open Spaces in the Historic Urban Fabric of Nicosia” at the workshop, Dr. Köksaldı addressed the historical formation of public open spaces in the walled city of Nicosia, their periodic transformations, and their reflections in the present day.

KAÜ academic Dr. Köksaldı stated that Nicosia is one of the most important cultural heritage cities in the Eastern Mediterranean with its multi-layered historical heritage and unique urban fabric, adding, “Evaluating Nicosia’s public spaces from a historical perspective is of great importance not only for understanding the traces of the past but also for planning a sustainable and resilient future. My goal is to contribute to carrying Nicosia into the future with a green and livable identity while preserving the city’s heritage values.”

The sessions to be held during the workshop aim to provide academic and practical contributions to the sustainable development of Nicosia.
