Visual Communication Design
With the advancement and intersection of communication and computer sciences, multimedia has rapidly evolved, emerging as a distinct field within Communication Studies. The Department aims to equip students with both theoretical and practical expertise, fostering their skills in design and production while grounding their work in an artistic foundation. Additionally, it encourages students to critically analyze messages, tools, and media within artistic, cultural, and social contexts.

The Visual Communication Design Department at the American University of Cyprus is dedicated to cultivating a new generation of creative professionals equipped to navigate and shape the evolving landscape of multimedia and communication. By merging artistic expression with technological innovation, we provide a dynamic education that blends design theory, hands-on production, and critical analysis. General Information
The Visual Arts and Communication Design program is a four-year curriculum. Given the broad scope of visual communication design, the Department is structured to ensure that students gain hands-on experience by applying theoretical knowledge through courses in photography, experimental film, video, and audio design, as well as practical training in the TV studio. Upon completing the undergraduate program, students have the opportunity to further their studies through the Department’s non-thesis postgraduate program in Visual Arts and Communication Design.
Education
The Department strives to integrate artistic creativity and technical education with the interdisciplinary advantages of the communication field. Through its curriculum, it aims to cultivate students who can produce original, high-quality projects in specialized digital media fields such as TV, video, cinema, and animation. By transforming emerging communication technologies into creative and artistic processes, students develop both technical expertise and a strong ethical foundation. Additionally, they gain the ability to critically analyze works within these fields, including core theoretical courses. The distinguishing feature of the department is its commitment to graduating well-rounded individuals with multidimensional skills, capable of navigating the complexities of this dynamic interdisciplinary domain.
Facilities
The Department primarily utilizes basic design workshops and specialized computer labs tailored for multimedia and graphic design, complemented by animation and video design labs. The program extends its resources to other departments within the faculty and university, making use of the faculty’s audio studio, editing suites, and video equipment. Additionally, it fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, allowing students to engage with related fields such as radio, film, television, advertising, public relations, and journalism, providing them with a well-rounded understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of communications.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Visual Arts and Communication Design Program, equipped with a multidisciplinary and creative background, along with expertise in the latest communication technologies, have a wide range of career opportunities in the communications field. They can work as designers in multimedia, animation, graphic, or sound design companies, develop websites, join camera or editing teams in production houses, design interactive digital content, pursue careers as professional photographers, or serve as creative art directors in advertising agencies. Additionally, graduates have the opportunity to contribute to the academic field.
