Interior Architecture and Environmental Design
Interior Architecture and Environmental Design is a multidisciplinary profession dedicated to designing interior spaces within the built environment. The Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design aims to educate and equip future professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance human environments. In the ever-evolving field of design, interior architects take on diverse responsibilities, including spatial analysis, design decision-making, project development, material selection, detailing, modeling, presentation, production, and implementation. Their expertise extends to elements such as color, texture, lighting (both natural and artificial), acoustics, climate control, furniture, and other essential design components.

The Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department at the American University of Cyprus is dedicated to cultivating creative, innovative, and environmentally conscious designers. Our mission is to provide a multidisciplinary education that blends artistic vision, technical knowledge, and sustainable practices to shape meaningful interior environments. The Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department at the American University of Cyprus envisions becoming a leading center of excellence in design education, innovation, and sustainability. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking, and community engagement, we strive to cultivate a new generation of interior architects who reimagine spaces to enhance human experience and promote global well-being.
General Information
Throughout the four-year undergraduate program, a combination of studio-based and theoretical courses aims to cultivate skilled and well-rounded interior designers. Our curriculum encompasses the entire design process—from analysis to application—supported by strong theoretical foundations. Students gain hands-on experience in teamwork, verbal and visual presentation techniques, and 3D animation, helping to build their confidence and prepare them for professional careers.
Collaboration is a key aspect of the department, with the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design working alongside the Department of Architecture. This interdisciplinary approach provides students with a diverse selection of elective courses, allowing them to specialize in specific areas of interest.
Education
The Interior Architecture and Environmental Design program emphasizes creativity as a key element in designing comfortable, inviting, and engaging spaces. This is complemented by a rich blend of artistic, academic, and social activities that foster a well-rounded educational experience. Facilities
State-of-the-art studios, well-equipped classrooms, wireless internet access, a comprehensive central library, as well as specialized laboratories for modeling, computing, ceramics, and materials, provide students with the resources they need to maximize their learning experience. While the number of students continues to grow, individual attention remains a priority. The strong student-academic staff relationships foster an open and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to share their ideas freely, enhancing their creativity and critical thinking.
Career Opportunities
Interior architects can work in design studios or architectural firms, collaborating with teams that may include architects, interior architects, civil engineers, and other related professionals. They have opportunities in various fields such as showrooms, fairs, exhibitions, bazaars, stage sets, yacht and aircraft design, and furniture design. Graduates can pursue careers as designers or production controllers in modular or furniture design firms.
