A Journey in Pursit of Memory: Luricina Told in Photographs at AUC

The photography exhibition titled “Either There, Either Here” prepared by Dr. Serkan Fundalar, faculty member of the Department of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, American University of Cyprus (AAC), met with art lovers on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 10:00 at the AAC Alayköy Campus.
The exhibition presents a comprehensive visual narrative of the cultural memory of Akıncılar village, formerly known as Luricina. Inviting visitors on an intellectual journey between the past and present of the village, the work aims to make a fading memory visible again through the streets, people, buildings and traces that are about to be erased.
According to the information given by KAU Communication and Press Coordinatorship, the exhibition was attended by KAU Rector Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci as well as many academicians and guests. Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Keçeci emphasized that Dr. Fundalar’s photographs are not only aesthetic frames, but also stand out as a form of cultural testimony, remembrance and resistance.
Prof. Dr. Serkan Fundalar summarized the starting point of the exhibition in the following words:
“We went in search of the traces lost in the memory of Luricina. This exhibition is not only a visual archive, but also a memory work that carries the traces of a disappearing village to the present. We sought an answer to the question ‘Where is this village?’ with photographs, saying ‘It is either here or there’.”
Shaped by the work of Dr. Fundalar, the exhibition is not only an artistic experience; it also aims to create a socio-cultural awareness. This special exhibition, which sheds light on the lost memory of Luricina, offers visitors the opportunity to build a bridge between the past and the present.
