AUC Represented at International Media Conference in Morocco

Dr. Emel Yılmaz, one of the academicians of the American University of Cyprus (KAU), participated in the international academic event titled “International Trends and Issues in Communication and Media Conference (ISMAC)” organized in Rabat, Morocco in cooperation with Sakarya University, Çankaya University and Kocaeli Health and Technology University (KOSTU).

Prof. Dr. Emel Yılmaz represented KAU at the conference with online participation and presented her paper titled “The Visible Face of Popular Culture: Television Contests, Media Representations and Criticism of Culture Industry through the Example of Nihal Candan”.

In the presentation, the functioning of popular culture through television competitions, the effects of media representations on society and the critical dimensions of the culture industry were discussed comprehensively through the example of Nihal Candan, a contemporary figure. The study included remarkable academic findings on how the culture industry shapes individuals and society.

Commenting on the conference, Dr. Emel Yılmaz said: “It was a very valuable experience to be on this platform where academic exchange, cultural analysis and critical thinking came together. A very productive environment was provided both in terms of presentations and academic dialogues. I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Aytekin İşman, who contributed to the realization of the congress, as well as all the academics working in the organizing committee and the host universities.”
