The American University of Cyprus (AUC) continues its social responsibility projects in the summer semester without slowing down. Under the leadership of Visual Communication Design Department Faculty Member Dr. Emel Yılmaz, the “Hand of Hope from KAU to Children” project, carried out within the scope of the Community Service Practices (THU) course, brought hope to children studying at the Cyprus Turkish Child Protection Agency (KTÇEK).

According to the information given by KAU Communication and Press Coordination Office, 50 children in the 8-11 age group were donated shoes in the project implemented in cooperation with the Lefke Relief and Community Association (LYD). The project lasted for four weeks and every stage of the process was meticulously planned. KAU student Gizem Çevik played an active role in the project and the donations were obtained through LYD and delivered to KTÇEK Administrative Coordinator Ali Birsen. As a result of the successful implementation of the project, Ali Birsen presented a certificate of appreciation to KAU administration, Dr. Emel Yılmaz and Gizem Çevik.

Dr. Emel Yılmaz, who spearheaded the project and is also the President of the Association, said:
“With this project, we aimed both to develop our students’ awareness of social responsibility and to support children in need. With such projects, we will continue to instill social sensitivity in our students and continue our university’s contribution to society”.

KAU Director of Health Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgay Akalın said, “Such social responsibility projects equip our students not only with academic knowledge, but also with empathy, responsibility and community awareness. These experiences will be strongly reflected in their professional lives.”
KAU Rector Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci emphasized the social responsibility mission of the university in his evaluation of the project:
“As the American University of Cyprus, we care about being at the forefront not only with academic achievements but also with projects that contribute to society. This meaningful work carried out with great devotion by Prof. Dr. Emel Yılmaz and our student Gizem Çevik has been one of the best examples of university-community cooperation. Such partnerships with non-governmental organizations are of great importance in terms of strengthening social solidarity.”
