PLPR Regional Meeting and Reclaimed International Workshop

January 16 – 18, 2025

PLPR: https://plpr-association.org/

Call for papers:

The concept of reclaiming land is not new. Due to land scarcity, cities and countries are urged to reclaim land from the sea, lakes, and rivers for offering opportunities of enlarging mercantile ports, recreational use of the sea eg. mooring of yachts and boats, as well as the development of new waterfronts with residential, commercial, and industrial real estate. What is a challenge for land being reclaimed now, or the refurbishment of reclaimed land areas, is respect for, and adherence to, the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs). The SDGs have been incorporated into city planning across the globe, including the UAE with its adoption of the UAE sustainability goals framework. Hence, making the workshop ideally located in Ras Al Khaimah as it offers learnings for the reclaiming of land suitable for residential and mixed-use development.

This workshop will examine case studies from cities across the globe that have reclaimed land, offering reciprocal learnings from these endeavours. At stake is not only the use and (re)development of land reclaimed, but also the impact on existing marine life, particularly heritable bio-communities – flora, fauna, sea life etc, as well as the any cultural heritage in the precincts reclaimed and (re)developed. SDGs 9, 11 and 13 strive to ensure land use and development is resilient to climate change challenges, especially rising sea levels and flooding. This calls for high level strategic planning and development to support adaptation and mitigation processes for reclaimed land. Further, SDGs must also now be incorporated in the design, construction, and delivery of development, be it industrial, commercial, or residential.
