AUC Political Scienc Workshops Attracted Great Attention

The workshops organized by the American University of Cyprus (AUC) Faculty of Political Sciences on May 5-6, 2025 at the Alayköy Campus were met with the interest of students and academics. The events organized within the faculty offered students a democratic platform to express their views on social and political issues.
On May 5, 2025, an event called “Open Microphone Talks” was organized with students under the leadership of KAU Political Science Department Head Dr. Burak Kurtcebe. During the event, the participants raised many important issues such as traffic accidents, TRNC election law, brain drain, informal economy, parent-child relations, Cyprus Problem, increasing population and language barrier, torpil and lack of merit, and expressed their suggestions for solutions.
In his statement regarding the event, Faculty of Political Sciences Acting Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alp Karaca emphasized the importance of providing students with an environment where they can freely express their opinions. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Karaca congratulated Dr. Burak Kurtcebe and his students for this meaningful event that raises students’ awareness of social problems and wished the continuation of these meaningful activities. Prof. Dr. Burak Kurtcebe, on the other hand, stated that students freely sharing their ideas in the campus environment contributes to the development of democratic participation.
On the second day of the events, a special screening of the movie “No” about Chile’s struggle for democracy was held. The film, by the famous director Pablo Larraín, deals with the peaceful struggle against the Pinochet dictatorship in 1988 and the influence of the media on politics. Delivering the opening speech before the screening, Dr. Burak Kurtcebe stated that the film “No” skillfully reflects the role of the media between power and resistance while covering the dark period of Chile.
These events organized at the American University of Cyprus not only contributed to the academic development of students, but also encouraged them in social awareness and participation.
