Radiotherapy

General Information

With the rapid evolution of tools and techniques used in radiotherapy, professionals must continually enhance their skills and knowledge. The Radiotherapy Program at our university is designed to meet the demands of current technological progress, globalization, and an increasingly competitive healthcare environment.

Mission

The mission of the Radiotherapy Department is to educate qualified, competent, and effective radiotherapy assistants who can work under the supervision of specialist physicians in the treatment of cancer—a field where radiotherapy plays a crucial role.

Vision

The department’s vision is to offer nationally and internationally recognized educational opportunities by continuously updating its curriculum in response to global developments. Our approach is grounded in scientific and technological advancements, as well as strong professional values and standards.

Education

The Radiotherapy Program is a two-year Associate Degree program. The first year focuses on theoretical foundations, while the second year emphasizes practical training. Graduates are awarded the title of “Radiotherapy Technician”.

Radiotherapy Technicians are healthcare professionals responsible for administering ionizing radiation treatments under the guidance of radiotherapy specialists and according to the measurements and protocols established by medical physicists.

Graduates may pursue further education by transferring to advanced programs approved by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK). With the growing presence of oncology hospitals, clinics, and specialized diagnostic centers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, there is a rising demand for skilled radiotherapy technicians. As the first program of its kind on the island, our Radiotherapy Program equips students with the expertise needed to meet this demand, preparing them for successful careers in both the public and private sectors.

Facilities

The Radiotherapy Program benefits greatly from being housed within the School of Health Sciences at American University of Cyprus. Collaboration with other departments, as well as access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research centers, enhances the learning environment and distinguishes the program as a premier choice for students.

Furthermore, the program maintains strong connections with experts working in both public and private healthcare institutions across the TRNC.

Graduates of the Radiotherapy Program are well-equipped to pursue diverse and rewarding career paths within the healthcare sector. As Radiotherapy Technicians, they play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, working in multidisciplinary teams under the supervision of radiotherapy specialists and medical physicists.

Career opportunities for graduates include positions in:

  • State and private hospitals with oncology departments
  • Oncology clinics and radiotherapy centers
  • Diagnostic and treatment centers specializing in cancer care
  • University and research hospitals
  • Cancer treatment units within military and public health institutions
  • Private radiology and nuclear medicine clinics

In addition, the increasing number of cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkey, and internationally continues to boost the demand for qualified radiotherapy technicians.

Graduates also have the opportunity to pursue undergraduate completion programs in relevant fields, enabling them to further specialize or take on leadership and academic roles in healthcare. With continuous professional development, some may advance into roles such as medical imaging specialists, department coordinators, or educators in vocational health sciences programs.
